FreeSchools World Literacy
Breaking
the cycle of ignorance and poverty through free education
In 1999
a British humanitarian and an Indian
catholic nun devised a simple and cost-effective model to educate desperately
poor children who would otherwise never attend school.
The FreeSchools model gives
priority, although not exclusivity, to girls.
There are now over 50 schools
throughout India and Thailand, providing free education to approximately 1,500
children.
The simple and effective model
means that one child can be educated, for one year, for just $15.
It costs just $125 per month to fund an entire FreeSchool of 100
children.
Sue & Derek (owners of Silver
Springs) became involved with FreeSchools in 2004, and successfully
incorporated FreeSchools World Literacy as a registered Canadian charity in
2005. Silver Springs is now run
as a not-for-profit organization, with all proceeds donated directly to
FreeSchools World Literacy.
